Development

Pawikan was developed by the Network Applications Research Team of the Philippine Research, Education, and Government Information Network (PREGINET) project under the Department of Science and Technology - Advanced Science and Technology Institite (DOST-ASTI). The main developers are Edwin D. Vinas, Jerremeo Raynier T. Gabas, Rey Vincent Babilonia, Paul Raymond Afroilan. Mary jane Dalangin, an OJT, contributed in the network weathermap enhancements.

The current version of Pawikan can already automatically collect data from interfaces discovered using the network discovery, so there is no need to create manual config files as compared to MRTG or simple cricket. It also uses a plugin architecture which can monitor specific targets based on the target device. The current web GUI and Java GUIs can already display a complex network topology allowing network administrators to take a closer look on the hidden nodes and open ports in the network.

The future versions of Pawikan will contain such important features like display of SNMP data in a human-readable format for the purpose of traffic analysis, downtimes/billing purpose, automatic scripts to watch the abnormality of network traffic (i.e., artificial intelligence). Most of all we are trying to port the web-based weathermap into a Java-based weathermap system.
